As many of my subscribers know, I produced a 6 part TV series on the 1960s that included an entire episode on Vietnam. This film, made by the government to train Marines, shocked me for its reality. I also found the narration track interesting in part because it seems to have ignored the feeling Vietnam prisoners expressed to the camera. Fear. some subscribers have commented that this is government propaganda. In a way it is. But I have many colleagues who were documentary cameramen in the Vietnam war and I can guarantee you that much of this footage is real. Clearly the narration and the music are presenting what the government/military wants viewers to think and feel but I can guarantee you that much of this footage was shot in real war situations. Some of the commentators who were in the Vietnam war and make the point that no film could give a sense for what the reality was of that experience. I do not doubt that this is correct but of all the films that I have seen or are in my collection, this presents moments that are the most real. God bless our Marines and Soldiers.
