https://www.instagram.com/skindeep_project Ex-gang/gang members who have facial tattoos are photographed by Steven Burton. Then Steven digitally removes the tattoos, creating "before and after images." Interviews are then held with the subjects while presenting the before and after images. Many of the subjects have not seen themselves without tattoos for decades!
The images catch the subjects off guard and often create a reflective and profoundly contemplative atmosphere, powerful, emotional and honest conversation is possible.
The interviews tell many truths about being in gangs and the realities of leaving them. It also reveals some of the root problems that drive young people into the arms of gang life.
Through the experience of the interviewed ex-gang/gang members, the viewer can gain answers to questions about gang life such as questions from a 13 year, about to get "jumped in" or a homie trying to find a way out.
The interviews give insight to the regular joe, nervous about the homie walking down the street towards him, wondering, "why the hell would he tattoo his face like that?". Within these stories, there is an answer for you.
This project will become a "how-to and why guide" through the first-hand experiences told within it. No Glamour, bravado or bullshit attached. Just human beings, telling their stories. No Judgment.
