Danny Tan's Throwback #105 This REMIXED performance of my arrangement of an INSPIRATIONAL MEDLEY by LANI MISALUCHA, JED MADELA, JONA, DARREN ESPANTO, ELHA NYMPHA, SAM SHOAF, DAVID EZRA, BAIHANA, the UP CONCERT CHORUS, the UP SINGING AMBASSADORS, the LAS PIÑAS BOYS CHOIR and the MANDALUYONG CHILDREN'S CHOIR for a historic event, the 31st ASEAN GALA DINNER on November 12, 2017 with US President Donald Trump as the special guest of our beloved President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, is a feast for the ears! Kudos to the creative genius behind this production number - Mr. Monino S. Duque!
I was so privileged to have worked with this stellar cast of fantastic singers whose musicality, discipline and professionalism know no bounds. They studied and memorized their vocal parts well, gave justice to my arrangement, performed with so much heart and gusto, poured out their souls and gave all they had until there was no more to give!
BACKSTORY: One afternoon sometime in August 2017, I got a call from Mr. Monino Duque asking me to arrange a big production number for the ASEAN Gala Dinner. In the past, we had been praised for a collaborative work for the 40th Founding Anniversary of the CCP - the FUSION DUETS Medley. I must admit that I was always looking forward to working with Monino and his crazy ideas. The original concept was a medley of the favorite songs of the Heads of State in attendance. Monino and I had to conceptualize the production number around Ms. Lani Misalucha, the first artist to confirm her participation. I convinced Monino that a medley of inspirational songs such as Climb Every Mountain, You'll Never Walk Alone, A Piece of Sky, I Believe, You Raise Me Up, The Prayer and Go The Distance would elicit a high-octane performance from our artists that would leave an indelible impression on our audience. The organizing committee wanted young people in the cast. I suggested Elha Nympha, Sam Shoaf and Darren Espanto. I begged Monino to include Jed Madela because I wanted a male singer who could match the power of Lani's voice. Since she does opera so well, I thought Jed's powerful tenor voice would be a perfect fit for her. I needed another female singer to contend with Lani. Jona came to mind. Monino agreed. Then I remembered that Jona could sing operatic arias as well. Why not another male singer who could sing opera? A brilliant idea of two females and two males singing "Nessun Dorma" as a quartet suddenly emerged. That would bring the house down in a "false ending". I thought of David Ezra, who could also sing pop and rock, to complete the quartet. Monino needed a female group so he suggested Baihana. I agreed. To put icing on the cake, we threw in two world famous and award-winning adult choirs - UP Concert Chorus and the UP Singing Ambassadors - and two outstanding children's choirs - the Las Piñas Boys Choir and the Muntinlupa Children's Choir. The result of the casting coup? A performance for the ages!
